The Monaghan Room in the Mater Hospital, Dublin will house the first every Next Generation DNA Gene Sequence equipment in Ireland. Shabra Charity has been fund raising to ensure this machine is in place by September 2017 to honour the promise that Oliver made to the Mater Hopsital to fund raise and provide this facility.
This facility, when in place, in Ireland will mean that waiting times will be cut from 2 years to under 3 weeks and the cost of testing reduced from over €1500 under €150. Currently there are 140 people on the waiting list for testing. These and many more people will be able to avail of this facility once it is in place.
This facility will have the capacity to identify a range of illness and potential illness, which will mean faster & more accurate diagnosis lead to more precise and targeted treatment.
A sample of some of the illness which can be identified through Gene Sequence Testing are:
- BRCA1 and BRCA2
- Sudden Adult Death Syndrome
- Diabetes
- Cancer
It is estimate that there are 250 Sudden Adult Deaths in Ireland every year in the under 35 year age group, this facility when completed will help identify and provide precison medicine to those with SAD gene sequencing.
