Monaghan Room
The Monaghan Room in the Mater Hospital, Dublin became home to Ireland’s first-ever Next Generation DNA Gene Sequencing equipment in 2017. Shabra Charity successfully fundraised to ensure this state-of-the-art machine was in place, honouring the promise Oliver made to the Mater Hospital to support the advancement of genetic testing. #OliversPromise
With this facility in place, waiting times for genetic testing were reduced from two years to under three weeks, and the cost of testing dropped from over €1,500 to under €150. At the time of installation, 140 people were on the waiting list, and thanks to this facility, they and many more were able to access vital testing.
This groundbreaking facility enabled the identification of a wide range of illnesses and potential health risks, leading to faster, more accurate diagnoses and more precise, targeted treatments.
Some of the conditions identified through Gene Sequence Testing include:
BRCA1 and BRCA2
Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS)
Diabetes
Cancer
It was estimated that around 250 Sudden Adult Deaths occurred in Ireland each year in people under 35. With this facility in place, precision medicine became available to those with SADS-related gene mutations, helping to improve early detection and treatment.
Thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters, this vital facility was successfully installed in 2017, making a lasting impact on genetic testing and healthcare in Ireland.
